The Hungarian remains a man in demand heading into the summer transfer window despite Fenerbahce’s failure to win the Turkish Super Lig this season.

Aston Villa and Newcastle are both firm fans of Szalai and both are expected to add to their central defensive options in the approaching window.

Newcastle have identified centre-back as a priority position that needs to be bolstered in the summer and Szalai is among a number of targets they have in their sights, while Lions boss Steven Gerrard is also looking to reinforce his backline.

However, according to Turkish broadcaster Aspor, Fenerbahce are not planning to let Szalai leave the club in the forthcoming window.

The Turkish giants want to win the Super Lig next season and see the 24-year-old playing a key role for them next season, while they also want to keep Kim min-Jae, another centre-back linked with an exit.

Fenerbahce also believe that holding on to Szalai for one more season and allowing him to develop more at the club will also increase his value, which will allow them to sell him for a higher fee than the €15m price tag they have put on his head.

It has been claimed that Szalai is keen on leaving Fenerbahce in the summer and it remains to be seen whether Newcastle or Aston Villa test the Turkish side’s resolve.
