After helping Rotherham United achieve promotion from League One last season, Wednesday snapped Smith up on a free to help them do the same.

Smith made his debut for Sheffield Wednesday in the season opener against Portsmouth but did not feature in the game against MK Dons last weekend.

The reason was because of an injury he picked up in pre-season and it was unclear up to what time he would be ruled out for.

It has now come to light though that the striker could get back on the pitch in a couple of weeks and restart his season.

Wednesday boss Darren Moore has stressed the importance of caution in handling Smith’s injury and revealed that the Owls will not be risking things with him.

On the way to clinching promotion and becoming Rotherham’s Player of the Year last season, the striker scored 18 goals in 45 league matches.

Wednesday will be hoping that when Smith does return from injury he can provide the same consistency to his team this season.
