Neil took over the reins at Sunderland in February and was able to turn them from an underperforming side to promotion winners last season.

The Wearside giants were hoping to earn promotion into the Premier League this term under Neil and have made a positive start to their Championship campaign.

But Sunderland are set to lose their boss as Neil has agreed a deal with rivals Stoke to take over the vacant managerial position at the bet365 Stadium.

The Potters approached Neil to become their new boss as they need a man at the helm, having parted ways with Michael O’Neill under whom they had a poor start to the season.

Despite sharing a good relationship with his players at Sunderland, and the fans of the club, Neil decided to leave the Stadium of Light because he felt the Black Cats’ hierarchy did not support him enough in the ongoing transfer window.

Sunderland have made no less than fewer new signings so far in the window, but the Scotsman feels the club’s deal-makers could have done better and has now decided to leave his post for Stoke.

It remains to be seen who the Wearside club will bring in to succeed Neil, who is set to leave after a short but successful spell at the Stadium of Light.
