The Reds were rocked this week when it emerged that Ward will be leaving his role as sporting director at the end of the season.

He took over from Michael Edwards at the end of the previous campaign and is highly regarded inside the football club.

Liverpool felt that the transition from Edwards to Ward was seamless and were looking forward to having the latter as their sporting director for the foreseeable future.

But the club will now be starting work on bringing in a new man in and it is not likely to be an internal appointment.

Head of recruitment Dave Fallows and chief scout Barry Hunter are regarded highly inside the football club.

But neither of them is likely to get a promotion and Liverpool are looking to make an external appointment.

Ward will continue in his role until the end of the season and the club’s transfer plans are likely to remain unaffected.
