Former Sunderland star Danny Collins believes that there is no better way for the Black Cats to react after their defeat at the weekend than by taking points from Hull City, who are sitting in the playoff spots.

Sunderland suffered a 3-0 thrashing at the hands of Coventry City on Saturday at the Stadium of Light in Michael Beale’s first match in charge.

Now Beale will take his team to the MKM Stadium on Boxing Day to square off with their promotion rivals Hull City, who are sitting sixth in the league table, three points clear of the Black Cats.

Collins pointed out that Sunderland’s goal difference has taken a massive hit with a 3-0 defeat against Coventry and stressed that there is no better way to react to Saturday’s defeat than to take points off playoff contenders.

The ex-Sunderland star also stressed that the Black Cats have already managed to beat three teams in the playoff spots in the form of Leeds United, Southampton and West Bromwich Albion.

When asked about how Sunderland should react after the defeat against Coventry, Collins said on Sunderland’s media: “[We have to] dust ourselves off; obviously, the goal difference is taking a bit of a hit as well.

“But what better way to react really than go take points off a side who have sat in the playoffs?

“We have done it already, with well three of those sides set above us, from third to fifth.”

Sunderland are undefeated in their last nine games against Hull City and last season both of their encounters ended in a draw.
