Former EFL star Adrian Clarke has stressed that Derby County have been one of the best teams in League One this season without looking like one.

Derby are sitting second in League One and are one of the firm favourites to earn automatic promotion to the Championship this season.

Paul Warne’s side beat Exeter City 3-0 earlier this week but never looked like dominating the game on the road.

Their performances have not matched their results yet but Clarke stressed that the numbers make it clear that the Rams are one of the best teams in League One at this stage of the season.

He pointed out that they beat Exeter 3-0 on the road while having less than a third of the possession and conceded that Derby are proving that there are different ways to win games of football.

Clarke said on the What The EFL Podcast: “That was their eleventh win on the road this season.

“They have scored 57, second only to Posh, they have got the joint-best defensive record in the league.

“The numbers tell you that Derby are one of the best teams in the league but the performances haven’t always been great.

“They have gone to Exeter, minnows by comparison, and had 30.1 per cent possession.

“There are different ways to play the game.”

Derby have a big game at Pride Park on Saturday when they will host promotion-chasing Stevenage.
