Dan Ashworth is expected to start his role as Manchester United’s sporting director with immediate effect after the club reached an agreement with Newcastle United, according to The Athletic.

Ashworth has been expected to move to Manchester United since he informed Newcastle at the start of the year about his intentions.

He has been on gardening leave since then with the two clubs engaged in a game of brinkmanship over agreeing on a compensation package.

Newcastle have been insisting on sticking to an 18-month notice period or getting as much as £20m from the move.

However, a deal has been agreed upon between the two clubs for Ashworth to move to Old Trafford.

It has been claimed that Newcastle have sanctioned the 53-year-old’s departure to Manchester United.

Ashworth is also expected to start at Manchester United as he assumes the role of sporting director.

He will have the overall responsibility for football performance, recruitment and operations at the 20-time champions of England.
