Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is incensed by referee Andre Marriner’s decision to add on eleven minutes at the end of the Gunners’ Premier League draw with Liverpool yesterday and award a penalty the Frenchman felt should not have been given.
The lengthy added time came as a result of an injury suffered by Jamie Carragher which resulted in the player being attended to by medical staff and eventually stretchered off the pitch. Indeed, Arsenal used this injury time themselves to score a penalty through Robin van Persie in the 98th minute.
Liverpool though struck back, winning their own penalty with just seconds remaining and, with the game ticking towards 102 minutes, Marriner blew the final whistle.
"When you think that eight minutes injury time and he played eleven, and when we clear the free kick we think it was game over already before that and so it was very frustrating", said the Arsenal boss.
And Wenger said the penalty awarded to Liverpool for Emmanuel Eboue’s barge on Lucas should not have been given.
"He [Eboue] is adamant [that it was not a penalty] – and you watch it again, and I think Lucas played well, he stopped his run, didn’t go to the ball and forced him to run into him", said Wenger. "It was not a penalty, but he saw it as a penalty and gave it. What can you do about it? Nothing."
