Former Spartak Moscow coach Nevio Scala has admitted he would head back to the Russian club in their hour of need. Valery Karpin resigned as Spartak coach earlier this week, but will continue to serve as sporting director and coach the side until a new boss is found.
And Scala would welcome the opportunity despite enduring a poor spell with the club in 2004, whilst also stressing that Marcello Lippi, who has been linked with the job, would not at this point be interested. The Italian also believes there is a good chance Spartak may appoint a Russian coach.
"I’d go back to Moscow after the experience of 2004", said Scala.
"In Moscow I was fine, but I found myself there at a time when the club was in difficulty and total confusion. Now, with [Leonid] Fedun and Lukoil behind the scenes, things have changed.
"The current crisis, in my opinion, is due to poor planning and a lack of serious and competent leaders, and now they are paying the price. There’s too much improvisation at Spartak."
And Scala admitted that he has spoken to Spartak and believes Lippi, who has been mooted as a target, would not be interested.
"They called me from Moscow yesterday and I told my ideas to the club. There are important coaches in Italy who can take the job of Spartak at this time of the season, but I think they will turn to Russian coaches.
"Lippi? He does not go. I know he is waiting for a national team and he won’t take himself to Moscow."
