Birmingham City boss Alex McLeish has promised not to bury his head in the sand after the club were relegated from the Premier League.
Just months after beating Arsenal to win the League Cup and book a spot in next year’s Europa League, Birmingham’s defeat at Tottenham Hotspur yesterday condemned the side to relegation from the Premier League.
A lack of goals, plus injuries to key players at crucial times could be pointed to, but the spiral of decline that Birmingham have experienced since their day of glory at Wembley is unprecedented. McLeish though has vowed to get on with the challenge of winning promotion back to the top flight.
"We are devastated and I am devastated for the fans", explained the Scottish boss.
"But we have had many memorable games this season and we have got to go on to another challenge. You cannot bury your head in the sand.
"It’s difficult the way things unfolded, but that has been the drama of the league this season. It has been incredible. With 39 points, you would normally be safe."
Birmingham now have the strange combination of Europa League football and Championship football to look forward to next season.
