Newcastle United look likely to step up their move for Wigan Athletic’s Charles N’Zogbia. Alan Pardew’s side are believed to have had a late bid for the 25-year-old rejected on transfer deadline day in January as they shipped Andy Carroll out of St James’ Park for £35M.

However, Wigan stood firm in their refusal to allow the Frenchman to exit the DW Stadium and were vindicated as N’Zogbia went on to prove highly influential in their successful fight against relegation.

While Wigan boss Roberto Martinez would dearly love to keep hold of N’Zogbia, the Spaniard is realistic enough to accept that a big money bid from Newcastle could prove too attractive to turn down. And the offer would have to be a substantial one, with Martinez not under any pressure to sell from Wigan owner Dave Whelan.

N’Zogbia has turned out for Newcastle before, playing for the North East side between 2004 and 2009.
