Zenit St. Petersburg are readying a bid for Bayern Munich defender Daniel Van Buyten

Luciano Spalletti’s Russian champions believe they need defensive reinforcements and have placed their eyes firmly on the Belgian centre back.

The 33-year-old moved to the Allianz Arena from Hamburg in 2006, but with Bayern thought to be edging closer towards signing Brazilian defender Alex from Chelsea, the door may be open for Van Buyten to leave.

Zenit would make the Belgian international a lucrative offer to see out his career in the Russian Premier League and also believe the player’s Champions League experience could prove vital in their forthcoming campaign.

Van Buyten, who also enjoyed a short spell with English side Manchester City in the 2003/04 season, is thought to remain undecided about the prospect of any switch eastwards.
