French striker Djibril Cisse is edging closer towards leaving Greek giants Panathinaikos.

The former Liverpool man has been looking for an exit from Athens after a difficult campaign last season; his wages are also becoming a burden for a Panathinaikos side looking to trim their budget.

And a side linked consistently with Cisse over the last few months appear to be in pole position for his signature – Lazio.

The Serie A club are keen to pair Cisse up front with new arrival Miroslav Klose and have been encouraged by initial discussions with the Frenchman’s agent.

A meeting between Cisse’s representatives and Lazio was due to have been held this past weekend and all the signs are that an agreement between the parties is not far away. Lazio must now negotiate with Panathinaikos in order to release the Frenchman from the Athens club.
