Liverpool have completed the signing of Uruguayan centre back Sebastian Coates.

The promising 20-year-old has signed a long-term contract with the English Premier League side and is viewed as one of the most exciting young defenders of his generation.

Coates was a key figure in Uruguay’s winning of the Copa America this summer and collected the award for best young player at the tournament.

Liverpool’s Uruguayan forward Luis Suarez is thought to have been instrumental in persuading Coates to choose to move to Anfield and reject a late bid from Atletico Madrid.

The Spanish side had offered Coates’ Uruguayan side Nacional £8M to Liverpool’s £7M, but Coates flatly refused to consider the Vicente Calderon as a destination.
