Both Chelsea and Manchester United are believed to be pondering a move for Bologna midfielder Gaston Ramirez.
The Uruguayan is a target for Liverpool and Juventus, with the pair having made all the running for his signature.
Ramirez recently inked a new contract with the Rossoblu, but this was intended just as much to put the club in a strong position to extract the maximum value for the 20-year-old as it was to keep him at the Serie A side.
Juventus are thought to be putting the finishing touches to a €15M bid for Ramirez and the player is understood to be positive about remaining in Italy.
However, a switch to Liverpool, who will be under pressure to show their hand sooner rather than later, would also appeal to the schemer; Ramirez would link up with countrymen Luis Suarez and Sebastian Coates – a major pull.
But if Chelsea or Manchester United choose to firm up their interest then the chase for the Uruguayan could become interesting and unpredictable.
