According to sources in Italy, AC Milan are closing in on the signature of Montpellier defender Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa.

The French side’s captain only has one year remaining on his contract at the Stade de la Mosson and the Rossoneri require a replacement for Thiago Silva, who has been sold to Paris Saint-Germain.

Yanga-Mbiwa’s attitude towards the transfer is crucial, with Montpellier owner Louis Nicollin insisting that he is not prepared to sell the club captain.

It appears however that the 23-year-old is open towards the possibility of playing his football in Serie A next season and has handed the Italian giants encouragement.

For Milan, bagging the defender, who attracted interest from English duo Arsenal and Newcastle last season, would be a big coup.

Montpellier however would surely feel the loss of Yanga-Mbiwa, especially having already bid farewell to Olivier Giroud earlier this summer.

Milan are expected to offer around €7M for Yanga-Mbiwa.
