Former AC Milan midfielder Gennaro Gattuso has indicated that Zlatan Ibrahimovic did not force a move away from the Rossoneri. In fact, he believes that it was the Italian side’s management who asked the Swede to leave.
Gattuso’s claim comes after ex-Milan centre back Thiago Silva’s recent statement that he too did not push to move from the Serie A giants.
According to Gattuso, who was released by the San Siro outfit this summer, Ibrahimovic did not wish to leave AC Milan, but was left with no choice other than to negotiate a contract with Paris Saint-Germain after the Rossoneri accepted the French side’s bid.
"Ibra sent me an SMS recently. He was very disappointed.”, the 34-year-old Italian told La Repubblica. “He did not agree with what was happening and I can understand that.”
The claim, combined with Silva’s own admission, will not please Paris Saint-Germain as it indicates that players are still hesitant to join the Ligue 1 side and may only leave their clubs as a result of pressure from their employers.
This could raise concerns among the PSG faithful that Ibrahimovic and Thiago Silva would have preferred to have remained in Italy.
PSG’s sporting director Leonardo has rebuffed all such suspicions however and declared this summer ‘perfect’ in every sense.
It remains to be seen if these issues will hinder the performances of the Brazilian and the Swede or whether both players will be able to put their disappointment behind them and bring footballing glory to Paris.
