Rasmus Elm is heading to Russia today to wrap up a deal which will take him from AZ Alkmaar to CSKA Moscow.

The midfielder has just one year left on his contract with the Dutch Eredivisie side, who are only too happy to realise a fee from his sale to CSKA Moscow.

Elm will cost the Russian Premier League outfit €6M and his move east will be all the more remarkable given that the 24-year-old rejected a proposal from CSKA Moscow before the European Championship in Poland/Ukraine.

Now the Sweden international has had a change of heart.

"If all goes well then on Sunday I’m travelling to Moscow. CSKA Moscow is in every respect a step forward", Elm commented to NUsport.

"I leave the squad with mixed feelings. Saying goodbye is always difficult and certainly given the great time that I have had at AZ even more.

"I have grown tremendously as a person and a player in Holland and I have many friends that I will miss."

And Elm also explained just why he turned down the chance to talk to the Russian giants before Euro 2012.

"At that time, no club had an option on me because I wanted to wait until after the European Championship.

"It feels natural that CSKA came back to me after the tournament and afterwards it became clear that it would be a good choice to make."

The midfielder has been linked with several clubs over the last 12 months, including Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur.
