Anzhi Makhachkala coach Guus Hiddink has praised Roberto Carlos’ contribution to football after the 39-year-old announced his retirement.

The Brazilian will remain with the Russian giants in an off the pitch capacity, but his influence on it will be missed and Hiddink must may do without the hugely talented defender.

And for Hiddink, Carlos was quite simply a world class performer, with the Dutchman appreciating his stellar career at international and club level.

"Roberto was a world class player", said Hiddink.

"Unfortunately, he has stopped playing. Every career, regardless of how beautiful it was, has to stop sometime", he added.

But the Brazilian’s involvement at big spending Anzhi Makhachkala will continue, as Hiddink also confirmed that he expects the former Real Madrid man to help change the face of the Russian game.

"Roberto is now directly involved in developing the new Anzhi.

"I am sure that he can make a big contribution.

"Not just for Dagestan, but for the whole of Russian football."
