Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has compared the club’s defender Daniel Agger with new Paris Saint-Germain signing Thiago Silva, as speculation continues over Barcelona and Manchester City launching bids for the Denmark international.

Rodgers has indicated that the 27-year-old is available for the right price, even though he also stressed he would like to keep Agger at Anfield.

The sum the Liverpool manager is believed to be looking for is a figure well in excess of £20M, money he would instantly use to rebuild a squad which he has made clear needs improvement. However, he would also lose one of the most technically gifted defenders in the Premier League.

But the former Reading manager accepts these things happen, and has pointed to Thiago Silva as an example of top class centre-backs switching clubs and also the fees they command.

"Top centre-halves are at a premium", Rodgers told a press conference at Anfield.

"Take Thiago Silva. He left AC Milan to go to Paris Saint-Germain for £40M.

"So it has to be a big valuation."

Whether Barcelona or Manchester City will match Rodgers’ valuation of Agger remains to be seen, but Liverpool will want clarity over the player’s future soon, with the transfer window clock ticking.
