Rennes are closing on signing Cameroon midfielder Jean Makoun from Aston Villa in the clearest sign yet that Yann M’Vila is heading for the exit door.
The Ligue 1 club registered an interest in Makoun in the middle of last month in the firm expectation that M’Vila would be departing.
But following a lacklustre Euro 2012, which also saw the midfielder refuse to shake France coach Laurent Blanc’s hand, landing him in hot water with the French Football Federation, interest in M’Vila ground to a halt, believed to be because of concerns over his attitude.
M’Vila was quick to state he would not mind a prolonged Rennes stay, however in recent days interest has been reignited however and English giants Tottenham Hotspur have bid €15M for the France international.
Rennes have financial issues to address, which makes a sale likely, even at below their €20M valuation – but M’Vila will still need to be replaced and Makoun is wanted for this purpose; indeed, the French outfit are now closing on the Aston Villa midfielder, according to France Football.
Under contract at Villa Park, having signed for the English club in the 2011 January transfer window, Makoun nevertheless spent last season on loan at Greek giants Olympiacos.
The 29-year-old has played in Ligue 1 before, having turned out for Lille and Lyon; another factor which has added to his attractiveness.
