Liverpool striker Andy Carroll looks set to sign for West Ham United on a season-long loan deal.

Reds boss Brendan Rodgers has confirmed that the 23-year-old England international is having a medical at Upton Park ahead of a move to Sam Allardyce’s men.

Rodgers has made clear to Carroll that he is not in his plans, despite Liverpool having splashed out £35M to sign the striker from Newcastle United in January 2011.

Carroll had shown form towards the end of last season with Liverpool, scoring the goal which took the Reds into the FA Cup final, while he also gained plaudits for his performances with England at Euro 2012.

These have however not been sufficient to persuade Rodgers of Carroll’s ability and the former Reading manager has opted to send the expensive striker on loan to West Ham.

"Andy is at West Ham, going through a medical there", Rodgers was quoted as saying on the BBC.

"It is very simple – the club have made a monumental investment in big Andy. At the moment he is not playing. He made it very clear he wanted to play games and this is his last chance to do that", he added.

And the Liverpool boss insisted that he only sees the powerful forward as a second-choice player.

"You don’t need to be a rocket scientist to see Andy has been a cover player for us and has been excellent in terms of his attitude and acceptance of where he is at.

"But I don’t think we are in a position to have £35M players as third-choice strikers, or wingers who are on £5M-£6M a year."
