Aston Villa are mounting a strong push to sign Racing Genk striker Christian Benteke before the transfer deadline closes.

Although Genk and Aston Villa seemed to be some way away from agreeing a deal this morning, the Midlands club have continued to persist with the deal and the indications are that they have been successful.

Indeed, the clearest sign that Benteke is heading for the exit door is Genk having just snapped up Glynor Plet from FC Twente on a season-long loan.

The 25-year-old Dutch hitman would appear to have been brought to the Belgian club as a replacement for Benteke.

It remains to be seen whether Paul Lambert’s men, who had believed an agreement for Vitesse striker Wilfried Bony was in the bag until last night, will sign Benteke before the window closes, but they are pushing hard to do so.

The highly-rated 21-year-old is a product of Genk’s youth system, having joined the club at the age of just 12 from Standard Liege.

He has found the back of the net regularly in the Jupiler Pro League, though a step up will be required in England’s Premier League.
