Ibrahim Afellay has completed a loan switch to Schalke from Barcelona and is delighted to have landed at the Bundesliga giants.

The Dutch attacking midfielder was told that he could expect little playing time if he remained at the Camp Nou this season and has opted to sign for Schalke ahead of a whole host of other clubs.

Also potential destinations for Afellay were Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, Inter, Lille, Liverpool and Newcastle.

For Schalke snapping up the Holland international is a coup and the club are looking forward to the 26-year-old feeding his countryman Klaas-Jan Huntelaar up front.

"Schalke is in all respects a top club", said Afellay, confirming his signing.

"They always compete for the title in the Bundesliga and are in the group stage of the Champions League.

"That is what I wanted.

"The stadium looks great, every home game is sold out. It must be a brilliant atmosphere. I am really looking forward to getting started."
