Marseille appear to have lost out on Chelsea forward Gael Kakuta, who is set to sign for Dutch Eredivisie outfit Gael Kakuta.

Elie Baup’s men had been in pole position to snap up Kakuta on a season-long loan, with an option to purchase the 21-year-old for €7M at the end of the campaign.

But according to French sports daily L’Equipe, Marseille’s bid to sign Kakuta fell down due to salary concerns; as part of a loan agreement, the Ligue 1 giants would have been expected to shoulder all or part of Kakuta’s wages.

Now it seems though that the young Frenchman will spend the year with Vitesse, a club with close connections to Chelsea and a home for several Blues hopefuls.

Kakuta spent last season on loan at Bolton Wanderers and Dijon, enjoying an especially impressive spell with Les Rouges and managing four goals in 12 Ligue 1 games.

Remaining at Stamford Bridge would present Kakuta with extremely limited playing time and the Champions League winners are keen to hand the forward minutes on the pitch to speed up his development.
