Bayern Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has confirmed that he has proposed the Bundesliga take the German Super Cup to China.
The traditional curtain raiser for the new German season was played in Munich this year, with Bayern Munich beating Borussia Dortmund 2-1.
relatedNewsStory In 2008, when the Super Cup was revived, it was played in Dortmund; it has also travelled to Wolfsburg, Augsburg and Gelsenkirchen.
Rummenigge though would like to see the match taken to China in an effort to increase the Bundesliga’s popularity in the giant Asian country.
Indeed, the Bayern Munich CEO is keen for the German top flight not to fall behind its competitors in terms of Chinese fans.
"We’ve had discussions with the DFL. It is now on the DFL’s agenda", said Rummenigge to Sport Bild.
"If the executive has to make a decision, it could theoretically happen next year."
Should the DFL choose to take the Super Cup to China, they would be following the Spanish top flight, who have agreed that five of the next seven of their Super Cups will be played in the country.
