French side Monaco have been linked with Russian striker Roman Pavlyuchenko.

The 30-year-old, who currently turns out for Lokomotiv Moscow in the Russian Premier League, is believed to be on a shortlist of possible acquisitions for the 2004 Champions League finalists.

Monaco currently top France’s Ligue 2, but suffered a setback yesterday when beaten 2-0 at home by Nantes.

Backed by billionaire Russian Dmitry Rybolovlev however, Monaco’s ambitions extend far beyond simply bouncing back into Ligue 1.

The ambitious principality club, who boast Claudio Ranieri as coach, have a long term plan to once again take their place among Europe’s elite.

Pavlyuchenko only returned to his homeland in January this year, joining Lokomotiv Moscow from Tottenham Hotspur.
