Martin Skrtel believes that Zenit St. Petersburg midfielder Igor Denisov could make the grade in England, as speculation over the Russian being a target for the defender’s club, Liverpool, continues to swirl.
Denisov has been in dispute with Zenit recently over the salary he earns, with the large wages the Russian champions are paying to Brazilian striker Hulk and Belgian midfielder Axel Witsel a source of friction.
In Russia there has been talk of the 28-year-old being on Liverpool’s radar, where he would link up with former Zenit team-mate Skrtel – and the Slovakian defender was questioned about this by Russian daily Izvestia.
And the 27-year-old has no doubt that Denisov could make the grade in the Premier League.
"The skill level of players in the Russian league speaks for itself", said the Slovak.
"Now, Russia has a lot of quality players and, without a doubt, the Russian league, is one of the best in the world today", he added.
relatedNewsStoryIt remains to be seen whether Liverpool will bid for Denisov, but the midfielder is highly valued in his homeland.
Indeed, Russia coach Fabio Capello recently appointed the 28-year-old the national team’s captain.
Denisov is under contract with Luciano Spalletti’s men until 2015.
He has made eight appearances in the Russian Premier League this season.
