Liverpool centre-back Martin Skrtel would be an ideal replacement for Napoli's "most criticised" area on the pitch, according to former striker Roberto Sosa.

Skrtel has never been off Napoli and manager Rafael Benitez's radar despite several failed links in the summer transfer window, with January approaches very much on the agenda.

The player himself admitted last month Benitez was keen, but that Liverpool had blocked any move from taking place.

And Sosa, who played for Napoli between 2004 and 2008, is mindful of the Slovakian's abilities amid what has been a nervy defensive period for the club in recent years.

"There is some uncertainty in the defensive department", Sosa told Tuttonapoli.net. "This is because they do not yet know what it feels like to win a cup.

"It is likely that Skrtel can come. He has a lot of experience and can help consolidate a department which is perhaps the most criticised by Napoli's fans.

"We need to see how they get these players. Or maybe [Miguel] Britos, [Raul] Albiol, [Fabio] Cannavaro and [Federico] Fernandez have to play in such a way that we don't need to buy anyone.

"It was a shame to lose [Roma centre-back and transfer target Mehdi] Benatia especially at an amount that was so low. We hope that we do not regret that too much."

Napoli had been gunning for Benatia in the summer transfer window, but Udinese had denied their attempts and instead sold the Moroccan to Roma on a five-year deal.
