Napoli have added Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen to their list of potential signings in the January transfer window.

Rafael Benitez's side are on the lookout for a new centre-back and Vertonghen's name has been added to a list which also includes Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen and Liverpool stopper Martin Skrtel, according to Italian daily Il Mattino.

Benitez has seen all three defenders at close quarters in the past year, taking in their performances during his time in charge of Premier League giants Chelsea last term.

All three options have not had the smoothest of times in England over the last year.

Vertonghen, a centre-back by trade, has seen himself deployed as a left-back, something which recently saw him firmly declare he remains a central defender and on occasion feels like a "stop-gap"; although he did later backtrack.

Vermaelen meanwhile was restored to Arsenal's starting eleven against Manchester United last weekend in the absence of Per Mertesacker. However, Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has now preferred a Mertesacker-Laurent Koscielny paring in the heart of defence for nearly 12 months.

At Liverpool, Skrtel has featured regularly, in contrast to the latter part of last season, but still has fierce competition on his hands with Kolo Toure, Daniel Agger, Mamadou Sakho and Tiago Ilori all centre-back options for manager Brendan Rodgers.
