Real Madrid have been handed a blow after Germany confirmed that Sami Khedira has suffered a cruciate ligament injury in his right knee and will be sidelined for at least five months.

Khedira, who was the subject of a bid from Manchester United in the summer, while the Red Devils were tipped to return again in January, will now miss the rest of the season for Los Blancos.

The injury also puts Khedira's participation in next summer's World Cup in doubt. Khedira will undergo surgery for the injury at once.

He picked up the knock in Germany's 1-1 friendly draw against Italy last night, being forced off from the contest.

Real Madrid will understandably be dismayed by the news, with coach Carlo Ancelotti having to now plan for the rest of the season without the midfielder.

The 26-year-old joined Real Madrid after the 2010 World Cup, signing from Stuttgart.

Khedira has won 44 caps for Germany.
