Schalke left-back Christian Fuchs has been ruled out indefinitely after undergoing outer meniscus surgery on an injured right knee.

The Austrian international had been struggling with his knee for some time and now that the surgery has been successfully completed, it is expected that the problem will be cleared up.

Dr. Peter Lechenauer, who carried out the surgery in the player's home town of Salzburg, announced that even though the surgery was a success, the return date of the 27-year-old still remains uncertain.

A further diagnosis will be carried after a month following an MRI scan.

“After Christian Fuchs had time and again been plagued with pain in his right knee, the left-back underwent surgery on Tuesday”, a statement on Schalke's website revealed.

“How long Fuchs will be out exactly, is not yet clear. Over the next four weeks, the captain of the Austrian national team is to keep his knee rested, then the result of an MRI scan will decide the next steps.”

Fuchs has made 16 appearances in the Bundesliga this season, starting in nine.

However, post Schalke's lacklustre performance against Real Madrid in the Champions League and Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga, he along with his team-mates were subjected to criticism.
