Roberto Martinez believes that, along with Thierry Henry, Wayne Rooney is the best player the Premier League has ever seen.

Rooney, a product of the youth academy at Martinez's Everton, has been lighting up the Premier League since his debut in 2002, then further springing to prominence when switching to Manchester United in 2004.

The forward, who became England captain last year, has won a whole host of individual accolades, along with five Premier League titles, two League Cups, one Champions League, one FIFA Club World Cup and three Community Shields, all at Manchester United.

For Martinez, Rooney is simply in the top two players ever to have graced the Premier League and the Everton boss believes it is nothing short of impossible to contain him during a match.

"Wayne Rooney [is the best player the Premier League has had]. For a long time he has been a match winner", Martinez told a press conference.

"If you prepare plans to stop players in games, he will always unlock it.

"That is what makes him special."

Rooney missed out when Manchester United ran out 2-1 winners over Martinez's Everton at Old Trafford earlier this season.

Everton welcome Manchester United to Goodison Park on 25th April, when Martinez will have to decide how to try to keep Rooney quiet.
