Former Liverpool defender Gary Gillespie has stressed that it is important that the Reds get at least a point against Manchester City today.

Brendan Rodgers’ men are within a touching distance of the top four spots, but they will host Manchester City today at Anfield and the English champions are looking to win all three points to cut the gap on league leaders Chelsea, who are not in league action this weekend, to just two points.

Liverpool recorded a famous 3-2 win at home over the Citizens last season and have lost just once at Anfield against them in the last 23 meetings.

Though the Reds have a proud record against Manuel Pellegrini’s men on home turf, Gillespie admits that he is finding it hard to pick a winner as the game might go either way.

The former Liverpool defender believes three points against Manchester City would be a huge bonus for Rodgers’ men, but stressed if they fail to win, they must make sure that they don’t lose, to keep themselves in the race for the Champions League spots.

"It's a massive game for us on Sunday”, Gillespie told the club’s official site.

“One of these games you can't really predict because it could easily go either way as we have had some fantastic games against them.

"Fingers crossed we get the three points, but if we don't I think it's vital we get a point.”
