Steven Gerrard insists that centre-back Connor Goldson is the reason that his Rangers defence have looked so solid this season, lauding the former Brighton man's organisational skills.

The Gers kept a clean sheet on Sunday as they eased to a 2-0 win over St Mirren in the Scottish Premiership.

Goldson completed all 90 minutes in the encounter at Ibrox and further impressed Gerrard, who identified the defender as the reason the Gers are looking solid at the back, dubbing him a leader and expressing his wish to see the player stick around for years to come.

The former England international said on Rangers TV: "He’s a leader, he’s a huge player and we re delighted to have him here for a long time.

"He’s been superb both on and off the pitch since the day he rolled in and he’s a huge player for us.

"He’s the reason why we are looking so solid with his communication, his organisation and he is posting very, very strong performances.

"That is the reason he is vice-captain here, I trust him and I’m really enjoying watching him at the moment", the Rangers boss added.

Goldson has already featured heavily for Rangers so far this season, making seven appearances in all competitions for the Gers and chipping in with one goal.

The defender has set about building a productive partnership with another summer signing, in the shape of Nikola Katic, in the heart of defence.
