Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has indicated that players such as Anthony Martial needs to take ownership of their performances and do more in a Manchester United shirt in order to stay at the club.

Martial signed a new contract with the club earlier in the season but his form has dropped over the last few weeks and he has been frustrating to watch for many Manchester United fans.

The Frenchman remains a popular member of the squad amongst the fans, but there have been voices of discontent about some of his recent inconsistent performances.

Solskjaer has revealed that he has already spoken to Martial and believes he has the talent to succeed at Old Trafford in the long term.

But he also indicated players of his quality need to produce more on the pitch going forward in order to continue playing for the club.

He wants individuals of Martial’s qualities to take more ownership of their performances and return as better players in the summer.

Solskjaer said in a press conference: “I’ve spoken to individuals and they know, and Anthony is one I’ve spoken to, what we expect from them.

“Anthony’s got a massive talent, got a new contract he knows we believe in him, so just keep working.

“I think anyone that plays for Manchester United has to deliver, to stay in the squad and stay in the team and Anthony is no different to Rashy [Marcus Rashford] or Rom [Romelu Lukaku] or Alexis [Sanchez] or the many forwards we have to choose from

“And that’s the great thing about it.

“Now it’s down to players, ownership they take coming back pre-season, but I don’t want to talk about pre-season now.”

Martial has 12 goals to his name this season in all competitions for Manchester United.
