With Pontus Jansson leaving Leeds in 2019, Bielsa needed a centre-back and the Yorkshire giants signed White on loan from Brighton during that summer transfer window.

White was tasked with the job of replacing Jansson but had never played in the Championship before and there were question marks over his suitability.

However, Bielsa put him in the team straight away and the defender was one of the key reasons behind Leeds winning the Championship and being promoted back to the Premier League.

Morling conceded that it was a worry whether White would get enough opportunities to play at a club of Leeds’ stature, but he conceded that the defender did more than what was expected at Elland Road.

And the Brighton academy boss believes that the key was that Bielsa trusted him and White repaid the faith he got from the Leeds head coach.

Morling told The Athletic: “You’d always worry about whether he was going to play at such a big club.

“It was a case of, ‘Come on, give him a go’, see if he could get however many league appearances, that would have been good.

“But he did over and above, overachieved there, there’s no question, and the faith Bielsa showed in him to play in that many games was magnificent.

“But he repaid it as well, everyone benefited.

“It couldn’t have gone any better.”

Leeds wanted to sign White on a permanent deal last summer but Brighton refused to let him go and the Whites snapped up Robin Koch.
