Liverpool’s defeat to Burnley at Anfield on Thursday night was their first home loss in the league since April 2017 and stretched their winless run in the Premier League to five games.

They have failed to score in their last four Premier League encounters and are currently sitting fourth in the league table, six points behind league leaders Manchester United.

McManaman conceded that the Burnley defeat could be a key moment in the season as Liverpool’s next run of games looks tough with them playing teams such as Tottenham, West Ham and Manchester City.

He admitted that given the way Jurgen Klopp’s side are playing, they are likely to drop more points and indicated that their title race could be over by the time they face Manchester City next month.

The former Red said on Premier League TV after the Burnley game: “You have to believe it is [a decisive moment in this season’s title race] because they have lost.

“Admittedly, if Liverpool had drawn the game 0-0 it still would have been a disastrous night.

“They are now in fourth and Everton can overtake them. They are four points behind City and City have a game in hand.

“On top of that, they have Tottenham away, which is going to be extremely difficult, and they have got West Ham away and then they have got Manchester City at home.

“The way they are playing at the moment suggests that they could drop even more points.

“I don’t want to think Manchester City will just roll over West Brom and Sheffield United, but you expect them to win in the form that they are in.

“So, that’s seven points with a game in hand and it could be ten by the time they play them.

“And that’s too much for Manchester City with the way they are playing at the minute.”

Liverpool will be in FA Cup fourth round action on Sunday when they will travel to Old Trafford to take on Manchester United.
