Several injuries in the centre-back position have forced Jurgen Klopp to either deploy players out of position, with the likes of Jordan Henderson and Fabinho stepping up, or turn to academy starlets.
Fabinho has been a constant in the heart of defence, but Klopp has been unable to provide him with a solid partner at the back, as the German has had to chop and change to deal with the shorthanded defence.
Liverpool legend Aldridge insisted that Fabinho’s performance, despite the Reds’ poor run of results, should not warrant any criticism as he has been brilliant in the backline even while playing out of his natural position.
Aldridge added that Liverpool’s slump in form is also down to the attacking players losing their sharpness up front with the Reds also missing Fabinho’s services in midfield, which in turn has made the defensive department feel that much more pressure.
“Fabinho has been brilliant, we can’t criticise him at all, but it’s been difficult when Klopp has had to chop and change with different players next to him seemingly every game”, Aldridge wrote in his Liverpool Echo column.
“At the same time as that, the front three have gone off the boil too so it’s been hard to watch of late.
“They have missed Fabinho in midfield and I think some people have forgotten that as he has still been playing.”
Liverpool are currently winless in the Premier League in their last five outings, slipping down to fourth in the standings from the top.
And they will be eyeing climbing back up that table with a win in their upcoming top flight clash away at Tottenham Hotspur on Thursday.
