Magpies boss Eddie Howe added to his attacking options earlier this month by bringing in Chris Wood but he is keen on further bolstering that department.

Newcastle have identified Manchester United star Lingard as a potential signing this month and have tabled a loan offer for him.

But the Red Devils knocked back the Magpies offer to take Lingard to Tyneside on an initial temporary basis.

However, Newcastle could still strike a deal with the Mancunians for the 29-year-old with a permanent move rated as possible.

Manchester United are open to letting Lingard leave the club this month on a permanent basis for the right price and the player could also be tempted by Newcastle if they propose a big contract offer.

Lingard’s current deal at Old Trafford expires next summer and he has rebuffed offers from his club to sign on fresh terms.

The England international is set to leave the Manchester giants for free next summer and it remains to be seen whether Newcastle can strike a deal for him in the coming days
