The Magpies roped in Targett on a six-month loan deal from Premier League rivals Aston Villa in January to bolster their defensive options.

Targett has quickly established himself as a regular under boss Eddie Howe, starting four of Newcastle’s last five top flight games, only missing the clash against his parent club as he was ineligible to play.

It was unclear whether Newcastle have an option to snap up Targett on a permanent move post this season.

However, the Tyneside giants have indeed managed to secure an option to buy the 26-year-old from the Lions in the summer.

Newcastle will have to a pay Aston Villa £15m, less the defender’s loan fee, in the next window to add him to their ranks on a permanent basis.

At present Targett is a key player under Howe, who is impressed in the way the new boy has settled into his team.

Newcastle’s hierarchy are prepared to spend big in the forthcoming transfer window and it remains to be seen whether Targett will be among their permanent signings then.
