The Black Cats have been enduring a turbulent few days following the change of leadership with the arrival of Tony Mowbray as their new boss.

Sunderland are determined to earn promotion to the Premier League this season and are still in the market to bolster their squad, although there are only hours left in the window

The Wearside giants have been pursuing a move for Brighton centre-back Van Hecke as they look to strengthen their defence.

Sunderland wanted to take Van Hecke to the Championship on loan just as Blackburn Rovers did last term.

However, the 22-year-old will not be leaving the Amex Stadium on deadline day as Sunderland have given up on their hopes of signing him.

Brighton boss Graham Potter see Van Hecke as a player that he needs at his disposal this season and he is now ruled out from leaving his club.

It remains to be seen whether Sunderland will turn to any alternative centre-back targets having missed out on Van Hecke.
