This summer, Cowley’s side signed the 21-year-old goalkeeper on loan from West Brom to replace Gavin Baznu, who left Fratton Park after an impressive loan spell and being named the player of the season at Portsmouth.

Griffiths has taken up position between the sticks in all eleven of Portsmouth’s opening fixtures this season and managed to keep five clean sheets.

Cowley is of the view that Griffiths provides a calming influence on the group and revealed that he is amazed by the intelligence and maturity of the 21-year-old.

The Pompey manager insisted that it is unnecessary to compare Griffths with Baznu as both have different strengths and believes the 21-year-old to be a good signing for his side.

“Josh is 21 – and it amazes me that he’s 21”, Cowley told The News.

“He’s so mature, an intelligent boy, able to take information on, has a really calming influence on the group, and been a really good signing.

“I think it’s unnecessary to compare him and Gavin because they are both excellent goalkeepers in their own right.

“They are different goalkeepers, they have different strengths.

“Josh’s distribution has been really good, he has a really good connection with his sixes, centre-halves and also Colby Bishop.”

Griffths is currently away with the England Under-21s side and will be hoping to make his debut against Italy Under-21s on Thursday.
