In the summer transfer window, Nottingham Forest spent £150m in the transfer market to bring in 23 players to strengthen Steve Cooper’s squad.
Due to their sluggish start to the season, which has put them in 18th place in the Premier League standings, the Tricky Trees’ transfer policy has been under intense scrutiny.
However, Marinakis defended the club’s decision to bring in a host of new faces to improve the squad.
The Nottingham Forest owner pointed out that Cooper’s side lost Djed Spence, James Garner, Keinan Davis, Philip Zinckernagel, and Max Lowe this season due to being on loan at the club and stressed that those players needed to be replaced with new faces.
Marinakis further stressed that Nottingham Forest’s squad needed quality and depth to compete in the Premier League and dubbed the decision to spend heavily in the summer unavoidable.
“They said we have too many players and that it would be difficult”, Marinakis told the Daily Telegraph.
“But five of our key players last season were on loan, so we had to replace them.
“You also need to buy players at Premier League level so we had to add quality in all areas.
“If our key players were not on loan, it would have been a different story altogether.
“It was unavoidable.
“I didn’t just buy players to spend money, it was because we needed them.”
The Tricky Trees have brought in Brazilian Gustavo Scarpa as their 24th signing of the season after the player’s contract with Palmeiras expired.
