Holden was appointed Charlton manager this week and has already watched his side win against a Premier League opponent, with the Addicks beating Brighton & Hove Albion in the EFL Cup.
The new manager faces a task in the third tier though as Charlton are 18th in League One, just four points above the drop zone and he will be looked to drag the Addicks out of their dire position.
Holden revealed that he had other options to be an assistant manager but wanted back the feeling of being a head honcho and thus decided on taking the Charlton job.
The new manager is only on contract until the end of the season and he admitted that while different options were discussed, the length of the current deal was agreed as the right one between him and Charlton.
Speaking to the South London Press, Holden said: “There were options for me to go into other jobs as an assistant and double that up being an international assistant – a longer contract as well.
“I wanted to be a number one again.
“There was another option to do that.
“I looked at this squad.
“Once I was in discussion, there were different lengths of contract discussed, this felt like the right thing for me and the football club.
“There have been too many managers recently and everybody needs to come in, stabilise the club and get away from the danger zone and then assess exactly where we’re at.”
Holden was only in the stands for the Brighton game and will have his first match in charge next week when Charlton face Peterborough United in League One.
