The Black Cats have had an indifferent start to the season, winning two and losing two of their opening five games of their Championship campaign.

Sunderland had a brilliant return to the Championship last term when they finished sixth and lost in the playoff semi-finals against Luton Town.

There has been speculation about Mowbray’s future but it has been claimed that last season’s top-six finish strengthened his position.

Sunderland are yet to announce anything but a one-year extension was triggered in Mowbray’s contract due to his side’s sixth-place finish last term.

He is now contractually tied to the Black Cats until the end of the 2024/25 season as things stand.

His position at Sunderland is secure for the moment and the club are hopeful that Mowbray will build on last season’s performance.

Sunderland will visit Loftus Road on Saturday when they will take on Queens Park Rangers in the Championship.
