Former Derby County boss Rooney took charge of Birmingham in early October and has failed to guide Blues to a single win since then.

Birmingham have dropped to 18th place in the league table and are set to take on relegation-threatened Sheffield Wednesday at the weekend.

Despite Rooney’s poor start to his reign as Birmingham boss, Parkin believes that the former Manchester United player is still not in a must-win situation and thinks that some of the supporters would agree with him.

Parkin pointed out that Rooney has a good run of games coming, which is not the worst and believes that the Birmingham boss has been relieved to have the international break so that he can work and get his methods into his players.

When asked whether Rooney is in a must-win situation, Parkin said on The What the EFL podcast: “No, we are not; I think some of the fans would say that.

“I think sometimes I say that performance is more important than results.

“I think they need both at the moment, especially given the opponent [Sheffield Wednesday].

“And it starts a nice run of games; I think they play Leicester around Christmas, but It is Blackburn, Rotherham, Coventry and Cardiff next, after Sheffield Wednesday at home, obviously at the weekend.

“Not the worst run of games.

“They regressed a little bit in the defeat against Sunderland, against a patched-up Sunderland as well.

“All the good work we saw in the previous game against Ipswich, where they played really well for 45 minutes and an hour, certainly was not evident.

“They gave away some terrible goals at Sunderland, with balls in the box, centre halves all at sea.

“I think Wayne Rooney is probably really relieved to have two weeks to work on the training ground and come up with a game plan to try and get some of his methods into his players.”

Birmingham won 1-0 against Sheffield Wednesday when the two teams met the last time in 2021.
