Southampton are unbeaten in 14 games in the Championship and are level on points with Leeds United, who are sitting third in the league table.

After a slow start to the season, Saints have emerged as legitimate contenders to get straight back up to the Premier League at the end of the campaign.

They are currently in the playoff spots, but Parkin explained that they could soon be snapping at the heels of the top two in the Championship.

He pointed out that Russell Martin’s side are in for a relatively easier run of fixtures in the next month and with the kind of form they are in, their merry run could continue for weeks.

The former Championship star believes with Kieran McKenna’s men set to face Leeds and Leicester soon, Southampton could be close to the top two in the next month.

Parkin said on the What The EFL Podcast: “In the next six games, they will play one team in the top ten, which is Norwich, who are tenth.

“Beyond that, they play two in the top ten in the next eleven and play all of the bottom four.

“This isn’t going to stop here and if they can get through the next month in a similar vein and with Ipswich’s games – Leicester and Leeds to come and some massive games at the top of the table – Southampton could be closer to the top two.”

Southampton will be hoping to keep their run going with games against QPR, Swansea and Plymouth Argyle ahead of the turn of the year.
