Former Leicester City star Matt Piper has admitted that beating Ipswich Town today would be a massive statement from the Foxes to the rest of the Championship.

Leicester have been dominating the Championship this season and are sitting pretty at the top of the table with 58 points from 23 games.

The Foxes are odds on favourites to win the league and get automatically promoted back to the Premier League at the end of the campaign.

Ipswich are sitting second in the table, six points worse off than Leicester, and the two sides are set to clash tonight at Portman Road.

Piper insisted that it will not be just another Championship game for Leicester no matter what Enzo Maresca has said.

He stressed that it is a great opportunity for Leicester to send out a message to the rest of the Championship if they manage to win all three points in East Anglia.

Piper said on the BBC’s When You’re Smiling Podcast: “For me, it’s first vs second so it is a huge game.

“It’s different from a general Championship game because I think it makes a real statement.

“Ipswich have been flying this season, not really relented in that second position other than against Leeds the other day.

“And if you go beat them in their home stadium, I think that makes a big statement.”

Leicester and Ipswich are set to clash in a league game for the first time in nine years and given both sides’ goalscoring records this term, 47 goals scored each in the Championship, it could be a thrilling affair.
