Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer believes that his former club need a goalkeeper to replace Nick Pope and thinks that they need not look beyond David de Gea.

The Magpies currently have their number one out through injury and are not certain about the return date of the 31-year-old.

In his absence, Martin Dubravka has stepped up, but the 34-year-old has not fully convinced some and conceded three times against Nottingham Forest today.

Shearer believes that Newcastle United need a new goalkeeper to give the team solidarity at the back and they need not look beyond De Gea, who is currently available on a free transfer.

“Newcastle need a goalkeeper and De Gea is out there”, Shearer told the BBC.

De Gea would not come cheap though, given his salary expectations, Shearer insists, but to Newcastle’s advantage, the Spaniard is not contracted to any club.

“I know the salary will be huge but they would not have to pay a fee for him.”

Newcastle’s defeat against Nottingham Forest may sharpen the sense that they need to do something in the January transfer window, which opens for business in a matter of days.
